There is a little confusion in your comments- we cannot turn capital money over to the schools operating budget- this has been explained multiple times but simply put it cannot happen. Even if we could, would more money always mean better school? If you research this you will find interesting articles and opinions. I for one have strongly supported the schools and plan continuing so- I was instrumental in making their budget whole this year during a recession. We will probably need to give more this year but it doesn't come from the capital budget. The big task for council is balancing financing for all aspects of life for our community that the government is or should be involved in. A big underserved area is in our park and recreation department and I believe we need to fund this department better. I believe an improved Elmwood park and an amphitheatre would nicely fit an improving school system as some of the biggest things council can do for quality of life here and economic development and viability.

Maybe there is a large wide open space inside the heads of council members suitable for live performances...hence no need for an amphitheatre at all. The opening act in those cranial venues? The Righteous Bastards.

Seriously, it's sad to see this issue go the way it did. I hope you will not lose heart and still champion the causes that will help Roanoke become the city it must be to continue to thrive into this new century.

I'm a young person (mid-twenties) living in downtown Roanoke, and frankly this sort of decision by the council is exactly why we're planning to relocate soon. While I appreciate the efforts Roanoke makes to expand it's offerings in arts and culture, my wife and I have two small children that will be entering public school in the next few years. Roanoke's school system is a mess, the graduation rate is abysmal, and it's disturbing that the council seems to be so unconcerned. I don't know what kind of studies you've been doing, but I don't know of a single young family that lists an amphitheater as a priority above schools. We've had several close friends our age leave the area recently, and we're next. Enjoy your amphitheater, you'll definitely have plenty of undereducated Roanokers to provide janitorial services and sell popcorn.

Almost a half century ago the U.S. Supreme Court decided school-led prayer in public schools is unconstitutional. That decision has never been successfully challenged or overturned. It's the same principal here, only with adults. A Jew, Hindu, Muslim, etc., should be able to attend a city council meeting without being expected to join in someone else's religious ceremony. Why is that so hard to understand?
I don't go to church because I don't want to pray to Jesus. My prerogative. So now I have to avoid attending city council meetings too because I don't want to pray to Jesus?
Unless you're comfortable with worshiping Satan at the next city council meeting, please keep your religion to yourself during government functions. (Pray all you want, just don't make it a quasi-mandatory group function.) Or at least be honest with yourself and others and put a sign on the city hall door that says "No Jews/Muslims/atheists, etc. Allowed." You are telling people they cannot attend government functions unless they are willing to worship your God and your Christ under your terms. And don't give me the "you can stand outside during the prayer" argument. They did the same thing to blacks in the South when they made them sit at the back of the bus. Non-Christians are not second-class citizens. Do you want to stand outside while I worship Satan? I realize that's an extreme example. But hey, freedom of religion, right, not freedom from religion. If you don't let someone lead a prayer to Satan at city hall, you are taking away their right to practice their religion, using your line of reasoning.

For my quick thoughts and to get this rolling.

Elmwood was a no brainer since the beginning. I don't think any studies or money was needed to come back to where we started. It was a waste, but I understand the motions. Whatever.

I also think an amphiteatre should be given higher prioirty over the market building. Understanding Roanokers are passionate about the Market Building, but I think common sense rules out on this. I hate to say it, but look at Charlottesville. That is unacceptable for them to crush us. Look at their shows! Look at our shows. What will the Market Building bring? Not what an ampitheatre can.

The Market Building is nice, but even a better Market Street for vendors should be a priority over the market building. Close the street, put the vendors in the streets and keep the businesses and restaurants along the side. I absolutely hate the fact that Horizons blocks off the sidewalk on the market. UNACCEPTABLE and OBTRUSIVE! Open it up! Then you have the Hotel leading to a beautiful market street, leading to a new ampitheatre, which is all can be accessible via the Greenways for tourists and visitors.

Also, I don't think the lawn should have seats - a la Darien Lake PAC, Post Gazette Pavillion, Merriweather Post Pavilion, etc. Open and inviting for families.

There are too many Chefs in the kitchen. Always around here, and Roanoke seems to always have room for more!
